Positive. Autonomous. Action. Force.

Peace Mob Gardens and Kearsley Park Block Redevelopment Project LLC. is looking to expand our volunteer work force for the 2012 gardening season. No matter how much “extra” time you may have to spend with us this summer and fall, we are always very grateful and thankful to our volunteers. Even as little as 1 hour a month gets us closer to the goals and saves the bodies of our residents from growing exhausted and over worked while adding diversity, new knowledge and enhanced skills to the efforts of Peace Mob Gardens.

Everyday is a work day and regularly scheduled events can be found on FB/peacemobgardens or our android phone calendar synch at peacemobgardenscalendar@google.com-Password is required so please contact Jerin Sage or Phillip Jacks on FB to be added to the list. We also offer a mass text message update for all of our events, activities and accomplishments (regular carrier rates and charges apply) that you can join by sending “ADD (Your Full Name) PMG” to (810) 429-7729. To cancel these updates send “STOP (Your Full Name) PMG” to (810) 429-7729 at any time.

We are located on the 1400 block of Illinois Avenue in Flint, Michigan and encourage all of you to come enjoy the many wonderful projects and people that together make the Peace Mob. All ages are welcomed however, children under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian present. We have a security and liability waiver that all volunteers and visitors must sign to ensure the safety and level of responsibility required to participate in any activities that Peace Mob Gardens may host. Regularly scheduled educational workshops for people of all ages are offered free of charge on a first come first serve basis and special reservations can be made for private groups with specific educational needs or goals for a fee (charges will be based off of the cost of needed supplies and materials for your group and rental of the needed space/time).

What do we need you to do?

Every Single Bit of Effort, Attention, or Action that is devoted to the ideas of Positive Autonomous Action (Peace Mob) is needed to help influence members of our community to step up and make the changes that are necessary for a more positive and prosperous future. Too vague? We need Leaders and Followers, Movers and Shakers, Students and Teachers, Business Professionals and Professional Businesses. We need laborers to help weed, mow, plant and train our many lots. We need builders to help build the many projects/ideas that are in progress or to come. We need creators to establish new ideas, concepts and projects to share with our community. We need technical support to help manage and organize the mailing lists, internet presence, digital media and community outreach efforts. We need artists to come decorate and manifest dreams of beautification. We need innovative and creative people that are not afraid to get up, stand up and get in this fight against poverty, failing education systems and community decay. Do Not Feel Limited or out of options. Do Not Allow yourself to be told ,”There’s nothing to do” or “it’s too late”. Do Not Think or believe that you cannot make a difference in this world. Do Not give up. Do Not give in. You can be part of a Positive Autonomous Action Force…Most of you that are reading this are a piece of The Peace Mob already…you just didn’t know that this ideology has already been defined and actively collecting like-minds.

We will be designing and constructing a non-permanant green house structure to raise our teenage plants in before they go in the ground. As of now, we have a germination station for our seedlings but need a bit more room when they take off.

Design: we would like to mix several designs and methods together while constructing this structure. Things like recycled glass doors and windows will be used for some walls and lids to allow sunlight in. We need people to come paint the frames so we can have a collaborative art piece/awesome greenhouse! Please Come paint! Bring any extra supplies/materials that you may have, we are running very low on just about everyting:(

recycled window greenhouse

2 liters bound together

Plastic 2 liter bottles cut and attatched together can form another wall and show an example of how to reuse materials.

pop bottle greenhouse

And last, a rubbermaid compost pile (hot pile) to form a smaller skirt for the higher end side wall and create heat for the structure.

compost creates many biproducts like heat and co2

We will be taking pictures and posting more about this as we make progression. If you have any ideas or comments please feel free to add them! Come join us at the 1400 block of Illinois ave for a great and educational time!

Peace Mob Garden red barn set for demo. We're asking Mayor Walling to consider saving it from that fate
Peace Mob Garden red barn set for demo. We’re asking Mayor Walling to consider saving it from that fate

Thank you everyone that came out and helped today! We will have a lot more events coming up in the spring, and it would be great to see all your faces at them! We succeeded in moving everything out of the garden barn and into a temporary storage location. We are still doing everything we can to save this barn! We need your support! Please call, email, or go visit the mayor and let him know how important this barn is to Peace Mob. We NEED this barn (and the driveway that goes to it), not only to store our garden tools in, but it also acts as our rain catchment system saving us thousands of dollars every year on a water bill.

Go here for more pictures of today’s events!

We have a general idea of what we want planted and are almost to the budget stages of this project. There is going to be a lot of amazing additions and treats in the garden this year and we can’t wait to post the first pics of the seedlings in the nursery.

When it comes to seeds, please avoid using seeds that are unable to reproduce fertile seeds or are “altered” or “enhanced.” If anyone is interested in helping with the funding, germimating/raising or planting contact Blair Neifert, our lead garden planning coordinator.

More updates are coming very soon.

We need to build some shelves and stands for the baby sprouts to germinate in the “nursery”(front room of whitehouse) and need a couple recycled windows replaced very soon to eliminate the cold drafts and capture the suns heat. This will be good project to get things started for the year and will be happening this week. If you are interested in building/constructing please contact Derek Williams our lead building coordinator. Please leave any suggestions for projects or ideas pertaining to a nursery or germination station in the comment section of this blog for others to view.

Folks are always asking what they can do to help. Well, this time of year we need help with the hype! Getting the word out and getting people excited for some back breaking labor under the sun and becoming educated about urban gardening and active in the community. Here are some things to do that are simple, quick and the best part about it is, it doesn’t even require that you get up yet!

1. Become a wordpress.com user if you’re not already. This allows you to comment directly on our garden blog posts and join our web community in sharing information and manifesting dreams with action.
2. Subscribe to our blog. Your e-mail address adds up in our mailing lists on our site, allowing yourself more opportunities to get involved in events and fundraisers for buying tools, seeds, plants, and for funding building, educational projects and tours.

3. Tell your friends about us. Thepeacemob.com Word of mouth is always the best way to help the spread the word. Suggest our page to your friends and share our blog post links or pictures and albums on your profile page by clicking the share link. Tell your church groups, schools, co workers and family about us and get active in your community with the Peace Mob Gardens.

By working together and doubling or tripling the number of people involved and the number of people served from last year, we can make this another summer of reaching for the highest ring of excellence and going past our own expectations once again.

oysters on spent coffee grinds

oysters on spent coffee grinds

I have been researching the cultivation of edible fungus to be included in our variety of crops this year and would also like to experiment with organic structures such as earthships. Why not combine the two and create a rounded greenhouse made in the side of a hill from bags of earth? Covered in moss or grass to bind the ‘blocks’ together and topped with recycled window panes. Holding inside a variety of innoculated logs on display. I have access to the spores and materials needed to build the structure as well as start the fungus. We will need to work out the humidity vs ventalation of this green house through discussion but I think small holes creating a vacumm within will work fine. Any suggestions on varieties of mushrooms?
